Lester Lion 2012 Calendar
During 2011, in partnership with the Loughborough Lions charity, we ran a competition within six North Leicestershire primary schools:
Robert Bakewell Primary and Cobden Primary in Loughborough, The Grove Primary and Brownlow Primary, Melton, Christchurch and St Peters Primary, Mountsorrel and Belvoirdale Primary, Coalville.
Pupils in years one and five at the schools were asked to illustrate a different safety theme for each month. The calendars were then distributed to all children in the six schools – over 2,000 in total - to take home to their families.
We were delighted with the finished calendars and the support and enthusiasm of the teachers in the participating schools. Representatives of LFRS and Loughborough Lions, accompanied by our Lester Lion mascot, visited the schools during December to present prizes to those children whose illustrations were selected for inclusion in the calendar.
We hope the families enjoy the calendars and take the important messages on board!
'Dragons Den' Challenge
LFRS also worked in partnership with the LEBC (Leicestershire Education Business Company) to sponsor a ‘Dragons Den’ type challenge designed for Key Stage 3 students.
This challenge was designed to raise student’s awareness of the dangers of misusing fireworks and fire in the run up to Bonfire night and Diwali.
Teams of students from three Leicestershire secondary schools took up the challenge of developing a resource which can be used to promote awareness amongst their peers of the dangers of this type of anti-social behaviour.
Students were encouraged to create an interactive resource such as a web page or a game suitable for use in future LFRS Bonfire and Fireworks safety campaigns.
In the final, teams from Humphrey Perkins High, Barrow on Soar and Garendon High, Loughborough presented their ideas to a panel of judges which included representatives from LFRS, the LEBC and Leicestershire Constabulary.
The winning team (pictured) a group of four Year 7 students from Humphrey Perkins (and the youngest of the groups), came up with a lively and engaging short video clip set to music, using Lego models, which the judges felt would fit in very well with future campaigns. However, we were impressed with the high standard of all the entries and the students’ excellent presentation skills.
Fireskills
Between October and December 2011 we ran three separate and very successful Fireskills courses. Over half term we held one at Western fire station with young people from New Parks Youth Centre, as well as another course during school term time in November and early December at Market Harborough, with students from The Robert Smyth School. Participants in both courses achieved a Level 1 ASDAN Key Skills award in Improving Own Learning and Performance.
Central fire station was host to another Fireskills course which ran over four Saturdays, funded by Leicestershire Youth Offending Service and including young people from several areas of Leicestershire and Rutland.
We are looking forward to a busy 2012 and already have courses planned at both Lutterworth and Hinckley in March. We have also received funding from Melton to run one there in the near future.
