SMOKE ALARM ALERTS OCCUPANT TO FIRE

At approximately 3:15am this morning, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service
received a call to a house fire on Winforde Crescent in Braunstone, Leicester.
Crews from Western Fire and Rescue Station attended to find the kitchen area, on
the ground floor of the semi-detached property, well alight.
Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property to extinguish the
fire.

The kitchen was severely damaged. The cause of the fire was found to have been
an electrical fault with a tumble dryer. The occupant of this property was alerted to
the fire by their smoke alarms and was able to escape unharmed.
Richard Headley, Community Safety Manager for the central area of the county, said:

‘The occupant of this property was alerted to this fire by their working smoke
alarms, I strongly urge everyone to fit and maintain at least one smoke alarm
on each floor of their property. Never remove the batteries from your smoke
alarms and make sure that you check they work on a regular basis. Smoke
alarms cost as little as five pounds and they really do save lives. Home fire
safety checks can help you to establish potential risks in the home; we are
particularly trying to target vulnerable groups in the community. For more
information about home fire safety checks please call 0116 287 2241’.
