Firefighters Urge People To Take Extra Care Whilst Cooking

Shortly after 2am on 3 February, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service received a
call to a flat fire on Christow Street in St Matthews Leicester.

Crews from Eastern and Central Fire and Rescue Stations attended to find a fire in
the kitchen area of the flat.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property to extinguish the fire.
The fire started after a pan was left unattended on a cooker. The kitchen was smoke
damaged. The occupants had smoke alarms fitted in the property that alerted them
to this fire enabling them all to escape unharmed. Crews are completing a fire safety
leaflet drop in the surrounding areas.

Paul Dickens, Station Manager who attended the incident, said:

‘Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service work hard to educate people to the
dangers when cooking however it’s disappointing to hear that another fire has
been caused by an unattended pan.

Please take care whilst cooking, never leave pans unattended, always keep
your cooker clean and free from build up of fats/food.

I am pleased to see that the occupants of this property had smoke alarms
installed in their home and I want to urge people to do the same.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service have smoke detectors that can be
fitted at the same time as a Home Fire Safety Check and we are particularly
trying to target vulnerable groups in the community.

If you would like to find out more about Home Fire Safety Checks then please
call 0116 287 2241 to ask for a visit. It is all free and it could save your life if
there is a fire in your home’.
