Occupants Escape Fire Unharmed And Firefighters Rescue Dog

At 3:40pm on 29 January, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service received a call to
a house fire on Melton Road in Syston.

Crews attended from Syston, Eastern and Western Fire and Rescue Stations to find
a fire in the bedroom of the mid-terraced house.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property to extinguish the fire
and also managed to rescue the occupant’s dog.

The occupant of the property had been alerted to the fire by their smoke alarm and
had therefore managed to escape without injury. The cause of the fire was an
electrical fault with fairy lights that had been placed in between the bed slats of a
bunk bed, under a mattress. The bedroom was severely smoke damaged.
Greg Ayres, Crew Manager, who attended the incident, said:

‘The occupant of this property was alerted to this fire by their smoke alarm. We
strongly urge everyone to fit and maintain at least one smoke alarm on each
floor of their property. Never remove the batteries from your smoke alarms
and make sure that you check they work on a regular basis. Smoke alarms
cost as little as five pounds and they really do save lives.
Make sure that you hang lights and lamps so that they are not in contact with
furnishings, paper, ornaments, decorations, or other flammable items.
Home fire safety checks can help you to establish potential risks in the home;
we are particularly trying to target vulnerable groups in the community. For
more information about home fire safety checks please call 0116 287 2241’.
