Woman And Dog Rescued From House Fire

Woman And Dog Rescued From House Fire

At 10:21 pm on Saturday 29 March, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service received

a call to reports of a house fire in Brooke Street, Braunston in Rutland, where all

occupants had evacuated the house with the exception of two dogs.

Firefighters from Oakham and Uppingham Stations were sent to deal with the

incident. On arrival, a female occupant of the property had returned to the house to

rescue her dogs. The lady’s husband also tried to enter the property but was beaten

back by the intensity of the fire and smoke.

Due to the quick response and professionalism of the crew from Oakham Fire &

Rescue Station, Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property and

found the woman unconscious in an upstairs bedroom. They were able to complete

the rescue and then administer oxygen therapy until the arrival of the ambulance.

The Firefighters also rescued one of the dogs; the other dog had managed to escape

from the house sometime earlier.

The cause of the fire was accidental sparks from an open fire which ignited the

carpet, unfortunately the occupants did not use a fire guard.

Richard Hall, Group Manager from Melton Station, said:

”This lady is very lucky to be alive, the fire Service will always advise people to get out of their property and stay out and wait for the Fire Service to arrive. The fact that the property did not have a smoke alarm and the occupants were able to evacuate in time was fortunate. I would urge all householders to do the following; Install a smoke alarm, regularly check the batteries are functioning properly and to plan your escape route from your home. I would also like to add that open fires should never be left unattended and the use of a suitable fire guard is essential”

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service offer free home fire safety checks including the fitting of free smoke alarms and we are particularly keen to target the elderly and those living alone.’
