Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service in Full Support of Child Safety Week 2009

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) is supporting Child Safety Week, run by Child Accident Prevention Trust, from 22 to 28 June 2009. The week aims to inform and promote basic but important messages for child safety in daily life.

Stewart Payne, Southern Station, Red Watch Manager, tells us:

“Preventing accidents is an incredibly important part of the role which LFRS plays and this is a really positive week that we are pleased to support.

In terms of preventing accidents, we would like to let people know that it is vitally important to make certain that all matches and lighters are kept out of the reach of young children. If children obtain these materials, it can lead to unnecessary and possibly devastating circumstances.

As the role of the fire service is not just to put out fires, the safety of children is not just applicable in the home; it is also required wherever a child goes. If you have older children, you must still be aware of the dangers of leaving lighting materials unattended. Unfortunately, it can be older children who start grass and bin fires and these can be a danger to the public and to property.

Unfortunately, LFRS is also involved with road traffic collisions and in certain circumstances, extrications. It is because of this we must advise that cars are fitted with the correct safety or booster seat for the size and age of the child using them.”
