Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service Promote Lifelong Learning

In line with Adult Learning Week 2009, which runs from Saturday 9 to Friday 15 May, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) will be holding their own event alongside Leicester College, Unison and the Fire Brigade Union.

Adult Learners' Week aims to encourage thousands of adults all over the country to give learning a go: whether it be learning for pleasure, catching up on skills missed out on at school or getting that new job or promotion.

LFRS will be encouraging its staff to push their boundaries when it comes to education. Literacy and numeracy will be at the top of the agenda and staff will be invited to review their own knowledge and abilities in these subjects. Chairman of the Combined Fire Authority, Peter Roffey and LFRS Chief Fire and Rescue Officer, Dave Webb, will be undertaking the tests to measure their own understanding.

Andy Hartley, Technical Rescue Watch Manager and Fire Brigade Union representative, says:

“This is a fantastic opportunity for everybody at LFRS to give themselves a bit of an educational M.O.T. Alongside Leicester College, we are offering members of the fire service, both operational and non-operational, the chance to test their literacy and numeracy without feeling any pressure or anxiety about it. We are offering a programme for personnel to improve their knowledge and understanding in a positive and encouraging environment”
