Consider Safety Before Doing it Yourself

As the weather is becoming warmer and the days longer, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service would like all of you doityourself enthusiasts to consider some advice.

John Webster, Community Safety Advisor, said:

“Home improvement is very popular around this time of year, especially with the long Bank Holiday weekend coming up; but by following these simple tips, accidents, fires and tragedies can be kept to a minimum.

Always make sure that the task you are taking on is within your capabilities, most modern DIY stores will offer advice regarding this. Safety instructions that are clearly displayed on the box should always be read in full before you start the job.

Always check that you have the correct tool for the job you are undertaking and never use multiway adaptors when using high amperage electrical tools. Make sure to remove and thoroughly clean any clothing or overalls you spill a substance on and be certain to ventilate when using adhesives or flammable liquids. Keep all flammable liquids and materials secured in containers and never smoke around them.”
