Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service - Haiti Update
Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service’s Mark Bryers and Kalpesh Diyar and the rest of the Humanity First UK medical team (HFUK), have arrived in Haiti and have begun treating victims of the recent earthquake.
Mark and Kalpesh left the UK on 23 January and flew to Miami, via Paris, where they met up with other US and Canadian medics before flying down to the Dominican Republic. They finally arrived in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on 24 January after quite an arduous journey beset with vehicle breakdowns and other difficulties.
Mark, Kalpesh and the rest of the HFUK team are moving between Port-au-Prince and Carrefour administering post-operative care, especially for amputees, treating infected open fractures and giving help to people who suffer with chronic conditions such as asthma and diabetes.
In the last two days Mark, Kalpesh and the HFUK team have aided over 1000 patients in Carrefour with varying injuries and needs. Today, 28 January, Mark, Kalpesh and the HFUK team are setting up a medical centre at a refugee camp outside of Port-au-Prince. Through working flat out dealing with the after-effects of the earthquake they are safe and well and in good spirits.
