Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service Pancake Day Safety Advice
Pancake Day is just around the corner and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) would like everyone to enjoy the day safely. In the last year LFRS have attended 284 incidents in which the cause was located in the kitchen.
Paul Speight, Community Safety Advisor, stated:
“This is a fantastic day which all of the family like to get involved in. Whilst most people reach for the lemon and sugar, some may have to reach for the fire extinguisher. It is vital that if you are cooking you never leave your pan unattended. Don’t put any food in the pan if the oil is smoking and never move the pan if it is on fire. If the pan does catch fire or if you are in any doubt get out, stay out, and call 999.
All we ask is for people to take care so they can enjoy the pancakes and not see everything go up in smoke.”
A working smoke alarm will significantly increase your chances of escaping unharmed. Make sure you test the battery once a week, change the battery once a year (unless it’s a ten year battery) and clean it twice a year using a vacuum cleaner.
LFRS wants everybody to have a fun and memorable day; we just want it to be memorable for the right reasons.
