Melton Fire and Rescue Station to Host Road Safety Event
Firefighters from Melton Fire and Rescue Station are working in partnership with the Melton Police and the Melton Borough Council to host a road safety event on Saturday 4 September 2010 at 10am to 4pm at Melton Fire and Rescue Station, Nottingham Road, Melton, LE13 0NB.
There will be Road Traffic Collision extrication demonstrations, free car safety checks, a display of classic motorcycles, and riding advice for advanced motorcyclists from the Police Bike Safety Team. The event promises to be a great day out for the family and the attendees will be able to take advantage of £40 off vouchers at Len Manchester Motorcycles for local motorcyclists and scooter riders, on protective clothing.
Melton Crew Manager, John Miller said:
‘Road safety is one of the priorities the Fire and Rescue Service are focusing on within the community of Melton. The road safety event will concentrate on education and not enforcement. It will be a fantastic opportunity for the local community to come along and engage with the Police and Fire and Rescue Service and see exactly what we do.’
The event aims to educate the community about road safety and will officially launch the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system. The computerised system allows car number plates to be read with a camera and hopes to combat vehicles being driven illegally in and around the Melton District.
Sergeant Jo Hodson, from Melton Local Policing Unit, said:
‘We really welcome this initiative because we are very keen to reduce the number of collisions and fatalities on the roads of Melton Mowbray. I would encourage as many people as possible to go along because the event will be packed full of useful road safety information for bikers and motorists which will help to make our roads safer.’
Invited to attend and support the event are Chair Councillor Pam Posnett, Melton Borough Council and Peter Roffey, Chairman of the Combined Fire Authority for Leicestershire and Rutland. Peter Roffey said:
‘The Fire Service is committed to helping reduce road traffic accidents and Saturday’s event is another local initiative which through education and demonstration aims to encourage greater care on the road. The particular emphasis on motorcycling is appropriate because motorcyclists are at greater risk in a traffic accident. The extrication demonstrations illustrate the excellent equipment available and the skills of firefighters in safely cutting people out of crash vehicles. This event will however have greater impact on our community if it encourages visitors to drive with greater care and consideration. That is the best way to save lives on our roads.’
